Gather
This project allowed me to work with a team, and I am in charge of research, branding, and prototype. Through investigation, design, modification, and testing, our goal is to create an app that allows teachers and parents to track the daily progress of these students and be able to provide feedback immediately.
“Find a problem based on the subject and produce a product.“
“Yeah! Let’s do it!”
After we did the research, we found out that teachers have the challenge of communicating with ADHD children's parents. Unlike parents that have lots of experts to help them, teachers have fewer resources to solve the problems, especially with parents who have children with ADHD.
And here's how we do our research:The research consists of three parts. First, we research the knowledge of ADHD, the behavior of ADHD children, communities, the perspective of teachers and parents. This process helps us to produce a product that meets the needs of our target audience. The second process is doing an online survey and interviews to understand the teaching experiences of teachers to ADHD children. The third part is to narrow down the problem and scoop our ideas.
At the first beginning of the research, we faced a problem that the subject is too broad. ADHD connects to other physical diseases, such as Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), Learning Disorder (LD), conduct disorder (CD). We knew we must stop and think about it before we continued. Our goal focuses on helping people’s problems and makes an impact on our product design. Therefore, we targeted people who associate with ADHD.
1.Definition of ADHD
2.Symptoms of ADHD
3.Impact for people with ADHD
4.ADHD communities
Even we did numerous studies to comprehend that ADHD disorder affects children, their parents, and their teachers. Yet, we did an online survey to collect their experience and option about ADHD. It not only validates our resources but also to discover which ground of people need to help the most.
With the understanding of ADHD, we did an online survey to collect people's thoughts and experiences about ADHD. This step helped us find the target audience and their problems.Through online survey tool, we got useful data from 57 people.
After we recorded their problems, needs from the online survey, we found out that we need more information about the teaching experience of teachers. Teachers face lots of challenges than others. According to the data form survey, 90% of Teachers have experience teaching ADHD kids, and they understand the symptoms of ADHD. However, they think Although it seems that doing an online survey is redundant, it helps us determine one direction and validate the research is correct.
With the understanding of ADHD, we did an online survey to collect people's thoughts and experiences about ADHD. This step helped us find the target audience and their problems.
We interviewed two teachers who are currently working at a kindergarten in the San Francisco Bay Area.
1.I Spend 8 hours with ADHD kids every day.
2.Encourage the children and the parents.
3.Need to calm some emotional parents down.
4.Parents have expectations that aren’t able to do so.
5.Parents won’t accept the fact that their kids are different.
1.Spend 4-5 hours with ADHD kids every day.
2.Sometimes when ADHD kids can’t control themselves, all you can do is to leave them alone, that doesn’t mean we’re not doing anything at all, it’s just another way.
3.Parents and their kids have to be in it together.
4.Parents have no patience.
In this part, we find that they have communication barriers with parents, and parents do not trust the teacher. Therefore, we surveyed the parents' commands on the teachers in communities. The biggest problem between teachers and parents is that parents don't trust teachers.
Next, we need to gain a more in-depth insight into teachers and parents because we already received lots of information. So we created empathy maps to clear out our minds. Finally, we decided the problem statement, and the teacher is our target audience.
According to the process above, we decided problem statement and teacher is our target audience.
After we did brainstorming, scoop the ideas, we concluded these solutions above.
SolutionsI believe that there are only products but no brands, just like people without a soul, it is difficult to move people's hearts. The spirit of this brand is compassion, professionalism, and affinity. Because it is a platform for teachers to communicate with parents more effectively, the logo design has a feeling of gathering. The concept of using circles and two colors to form yin and yang symbolizes harmony.
In this process, our ideas were still abstract so we created a persona and task flow to help us transforming ideas to specific foundations. We questioned our solutions and listed them above:
1. How teachers upload an ADHD children assignment?
2. How teachers edit an ADHD children assignment?
In order to know whether our solutions work to teachers and test the efficiency of functions, we modified wireframes twice based on the feedback from teachers.
We want to make sure users understand the purpose of this app. Therefore, we created three slogans to covey three main functions: communication, organization, and I used three graphics, which symbolize the functions, to engage users’ attention because the product also needs to express the meaning of the brand.
We’ve been trying to create a REAL product even it is only a school project.
To be honest, doing this project is overwhelming because we faced different kind of challenges. We receive However, we still tried to do our best to meet people’s expectation.
Collaborating with designers was not the first time. Yet, this was the first time to work with one partner only. Working with a small team is easy. However, it isn't easy to get various ideas in the design thinking process. The way to overcome this challenge is to do lots of interviews and testings. The more information we receive, the more ideas we get.
